Get a Care Plan: Why Planning and Self-Care Matter

There’s a well-worn bit of advice shared on every flight: “In the event of an emergency, put your own oxygen mask on before assisting others.” It’s not just a safety instruction; it’s a powerful metaphor for life, especially when you're running a farm or agribusiness through difficult seasons like the one we’re in now.

Many across Gippsland are doing it tough. The stress of drought conditions is mounting, and for many, it feels like the wheels could fall off at any moment. It’s in these times we start to look sideways—to our neighbours, to social media, to others who seem to be doing just fine. You know the type: Mr and Mrs Bloggs who always look like they’ve got it together, somehow always optimistic, organised, seemly well off with cashflow more of a flowing stream than a trickle through a dry creek bed, business thriving. Their kids are kicking goals, the in-laws pitch in, and just roll with the punches better than the rest of us.

But here’s the truth: they’re not doing anything magic. Chances are, they’ve just made a great plan and stuck to it.

Care Plans Aren’t Just for Injuries. If you injured your back, chances are you’d head to the doctor and walk out with a care plan. A few sessions in with the physio, you’re not just healing, you’re learning: how to lift properly, how to recognise strain before it becomes damage, and how to ask for help when you need it. The same thinking can—and should—be applied to your financial and mental wellbeing. A Care Plan for your business and for yourself.

Planning isn’t just about budgets or contingency spreadsheets. It’s about acknowledging the reality that hard times will come, so why not be ready for them? When you put a plan in place for all aspects you give yourself permission and room to breathe emotionally, physically and financially. Then your neighbour will look at you the same way you look at the Bloggs, you’re no longer scrambling in crisis; instead moving with purpose, protecting your wellbeing and your business because you’ve been preparing for this. This isn’t about weakness—it’s about wisdom. When you take care of yourself first, you’re in a better place to support your business, your family, and your community.

Consider what a real reset might look like. Make a Care Plan. Creating a Care Plan starts with one simple step: talk about it. Have a conversation with your partner, your team, your family. What will you do if cashflow tightens again? What signs of burnout are you watching for? Who can step in to help if you need to step back?
