There has probably never been more information available to business owners about how to run, market and grow a business. The problem is no longer finding information and advice. It’s cutting through the noise and working out what actually matters for your business.
When you’re already busy keeping things moving, another list of things you should be doing probably isn’t the answer. Sometimes the best place to start is much more simple: pick one thing to focus on.
It might be a decision you’ve been putting off, a number you don’t properly understand, an opportunity you keep thinking about or one part of the business that simply isn’t working as well as it should.
And sometimes, improving the business isn’t about adding something at all.
There’s a natural tendency to look for the next customer, product, service, employee or marketing channel. But what if the better question is: what could I stop doing?
Which service takes more time than it’s worth? Which product sells but barely makes a profit? Are you spending money marketing somewhere your customers aren’t looking? Has your pricing kept pace with your costs? Are you chasing more sales when the real issue is margin?
These are the kinds of questions that can get lost when you’re immersed in the day-to-day. One better decision, whether that’s changing a price, simplifying a process, stopping an unprofitable service or redirecting your time, can potentially have a greater impact than simply working harder.
That’s also where having someone outside the business can be valuable.
At NEX, we don’t pretend to know your business better than you do. You’re the expert in your business. Our business mentors bring a fresh perspective, help explore options you may not have considered, challenge assumptions and work with you to turn opportunities into practical action.
NEX Business Mentor Kylie Jacobs says many clients already have a good idea of where they want to go. The difficulty is often working out how to get there, what to prioritise and whether an idea really stacks up.
“A simple roadmap can make a huge difference. You don’t need to change everything at once.”
You don’t have to wait until something goes wrong before asking for support. Mentoring sessions help you focus on the decisions you might keep circling back to, the numbers you need to work through, the opportunity you want to explore, or just working on that feeling the business could be working better.
You might work with NEX for one session or ten. The point isn’t to give you more information to add to the pile. It’s to help you work out what deserves your attention now and what you can actually do about it.
So, where do you begin improving your business?
Start with one thing.
